Director Shankar recently took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express his frustration and threaten legal action against those allegedly plagiarizing scenes from Su Venkatesan’s novel, Veera Yuga Nayagan Vel Paari. Shankar, who holds the copyright to the novel, shared that he was deeply upset after viewing a “recent trailer” that seemed to have lifted key scenes from the book. While he did not specifically name the film in question, speculation quickly spread online, with many believing he was referring to Koratala Siva’s Devara: Part 1, starring Jr NTR, or Siva’s Kanguva, featuring Suriya.
In his post on X, Shankar revealed that he had noticed several films using scenes from the novel without authorization. He wrote, “As the copyright holder of Su. Venkatesan’s iconic Tamil novel Veera Yuga Nayagan Vel Paari, I’m disturbed to see key scenes being ripped off and used without permission in many movies. I was particularly upset to see an important scene from the novel in a recent movie trailer.”
The filmmaker went on to caution those responsible, urging them to respect the intellectual property of creators. He firmly warned that legal action would follow if his rights continued to be violated. He added, “Kindly refrain from using scenes from the novel in movies, web series, or any other medium. Respect creators’ rights! Unauthorized adaptations of scenes and copyright infringement will not be tolerated, and legal action will be taken.”
Although Shankar didn’t directly mention any specific films, fans online were quick to connect his comments to the trailers for Devara: Part 1 and Kanguva, which had been recently released. One X user speculated, “It’s probably Devara, considering Vel Paari’s adventures often involve the sea and coastal communities,” accompanied by a screenshot as evidence. Another user posted screengrabs from the Devara trailer, writing, “No doubt, he’s referring to Devara. This is really unacceptable, Shankar sir. We’re with you—go ahead with legal action.”
The brewing controversy has ignited a debate across social media, with fans rallying behind Shankar and calling for more stringent respect for creators’ rights.
