Soldier Killed in Sarawak Forest Shooting, Investigation Underway

24th September 2024: Authorities are investigating the death of a soldier, believed to have been shot by illegal hunters, under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, confirmed that the investigation into the fatal incident, which occurred early yesterday in a forested area of Song, Kapit, Sarawak, is ongoing. The police are in the process of identifying witnesses, and a post-mortem is scheduled for today.

“We are continuing our investigation, including tracking down relevant witnesses. The post-mortem on the victim will take place tomorrow,” said Tan Sri Razarudin in a statement last night.

Earlier reports revealed that the soldier, who was participating in a training exercise in the Song forest, was fatally shot, allegedly by poachers. Sarawak Police Commissioner, Datuk Mancha Ata, stated that the victim was a 28-year-old corporal. He was pronounced dead at Kapit Hospital at 7:43 AM after receiving treatment.

Following the incident, the Malaysian Army (TDM) confirmed that the victim was involved in the Pasak Bumi Exercise (EPB), which started on September 21 and was scheduled to run until September 29 in the forested area.

According to TDM, the deceased was part of the 9th Brigade formation based in Sibu, specifically from the 13th Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment of Sarawak, as stated in Buletin TV3.
