Special Program to Aid Disadvantaged Students in TVET Education

Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran,

23rd September 2024: Students who drop out or are uninterested in continuing to Form 4 will be given support to enter the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) field. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that discussions with the Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek have led to plans for a special program by the end of the year.

The program will involve a non-written test for these students, providing them an opportunity to enter TVET colleges. He emphasized that even without an SPM certificate, the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) levels 1 and 2 are equivalent to SPM, while SKM levels 3, 4, and 5 are on par with a diploma.

Zahid highlighted the need for a supportive ecosystem, stating that the country requires skilled workers, and companies investing in Malaysia also need young talent. He delivered these remarks during an event with the Indian community for the Mahkota by-election campaign.

He further mentioned discussions with MIC President Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran to encourage more Indian youth to pursue SKM, which opens doors to higher education even without SPM.

In his speech, Zahid also urged Syed Hussien, the BN candidate for Mahkota, to serve all constituents equally if elected. He assured that the government is working to resolve issues such as the lack of crematoriums in Johor.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi noted that RM16.9 million has been allocated to the Indian community for various programs since 2022, including educational support for Tamil schools, with ongoing efforts to address other community concerns, as stated in Buletin TV3.
