KUALA LUMPUR 1 JULY : Regardless of race or locality, all students who scored 10As or above in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam will be assured a spot in any matriculation program.
A race-based quota system was implemented in 2005 to handle the program’s selection process, with 90% of the slots allocated to Bumiputera students and 10% going to non-Bumiputera students as stated in New Straits Times. The action was taken in order to guarantee that all exceptionally talented students had access to the greatest educational opportunities.
The Prime Minister announced “All of our children, when I say children, I mean Malay, Chinese, Indian, Dayak, Kadazan and all without exception. If our children scored 10As and above or obtained excellent results, without any exception, they will get a place.
This is an assurance from the government. As such, the issue of race should no longer arise.” (source The Star)
