Student Drowns at Sarikei Waterfall

21st September 2024: An 18-year-old Sarikei High School student, Alex Lau Hui Ping, tragically drowned at Wong Ruan Waterfall, Sarikei. Alex, along with three friends, had gone to the waterfall for a research project.
After completing their work, the group decided to swim, but soon after Alex jumped into the water, he drowned. His friends quickly sought help from nearby residents. Despite efforts, Alex was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel. The local volunteer fire brigade recovered his body after diving to a depth of three meters.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with water activities, even in seemingly calm environments. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution when visiting natural water bodies and to be mindful of the potential risks.
Drowning incidents at waterfalls, rivers, and other water-related spots can happen quickly, often with little warning. Sarikei residents expressed deep sorrow over the young student’s death, and the community has rallied around the grieving family, offering support and condolences.
Local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the Sarikei Fire and Rescue Department emphasized the importance of public safety and awareness during recreational activities near water.
