Student-Made Anti-Bullying Wristband Wins Major International Honour

JOHOR BAHRU, 03 December 2025: A group of Malaysian schoolchildren’s creation, an anti-bullying wristband that triggers an emergency alert with a single click, has won top honours at the International Science and Invention Fair (ISIF) in Bali, confirming the innovation’s global impact.

Young Innovators Make a Difference

The wristband was developed by a team of pupils aged 10 to 12 from SJKT Taman Tun Aminah (SJKT (T) Taman Tun Aminah), a Tamil-language primary school in Johor Bahru. The school’s headmaster, P. Sivasubramaniam, confirmed that the group, 45 students in total, brought home a total of eight awards from the competition, including six golds and two silvers.

Designed with simplicity and safety in mind, the wristband allows a victim of bullying to send an instant alert to a guardian or responsible adult. The invention impressed international judges with its potential for real-world impact, especially in school environments where prompt intervention can make a difference.

Recognition at Global Platform

The award to the wristband adds to a growing portfolio of innovations by Malaysian students gaining international recognition. Experts and educators celebrated the success as evidence that young minds, when given support, guidance, and resources, can produce effective, socially relevant solutions.

For SJKT (T) Taman Tun Aminah, the result underscores the value of education that encourages creativity, empathy and problem-solving from an early age. The school community hailed the achievement as a milestone, not only for pupil development, but also for raising awareness about bullying prevention.

Context: Rising Legal and Social Focus on Bullying

The wristband’s recognition comes at a pivotal moment for Malaysia. On December 3, 2025, the national legislature passed the Anti‑Bullying Bill 2025, establishing a formal mechanism, including an Anti-Bullying Tribunal, for handling bullying cases in schools and other institutions. The law aims to provide clearer protections for children, including the possibility of compensation for victims and counselling for perpetrators or their guardians.

Proponents of the law describe it as a long-overdue measure to ensure that bullying is not dismissed as “just childhood behaviour,” but treated with seriousness, accountability and legal oversight.

A Step Forward for Student Safety and Empowerment

With its simple yet effective design, the anti-bullying wristband from SJKT (T) Taman Tun Aminah offers a practical complement to legislative efforts. The win at ISIF demonstrates that technological innovation and social welfare can go hand in hand, and that children themselves can be agents of positive change.

As Malaysia implements its new Anti-Bullying Bill, innovations such as this wristband may play a key role in creating safer, more supportive environments for students nationwide.
