Tamils celebrate ‘Tamil Puthandu’ with traditional fervour
KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 14: The Tamil communities held a ‘Tamil Puthandu Kondatam’ (Tamil New Year Celebration) at the Kala Mandabam, here.
The event was organised by 24 Tamil non-governmental organisations.
About 300 participats attended the event which was held under strict standard operating procedures (SOP) in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The event began with prayers along with ‘Urumi Melam’, a traditional music instrument which played to enhance the celebrations.
To enliven the occasion, traditional performances such as Peacock dance, Poi Kaal kuthirai, and Barathanatyam has been performed.
The event continued by a group of teenagers performed Indian martial art which is known as Silambam.
The event continued with competitions such as Kolam drawing (is a form of traditional decorative art that is drawn by using rice flour), flower tying, Thoranam tying (thoranam is decorative item used by Hindus taken from coconut tree), and also Uri Adithal.
Uri Adithal is a popular activity a person will be blindfolded and asked to smash the pot with a long stick.
The pot, which is held high, is usually filled with flowers, turmeric water or various grains.
