The brand ‘Timah’ insults the Muslim community – Penang Mufti

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18: Penang Mufti Datuk Seri Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor has urged the government to direct a local alcoholic beverage business to replace the ‘Timah’ logo with photos used on its bottles.
In a statement today, he said that this needs to be changed in order to avoid tensions and maintain peace in this multiracial country.
“As we all know, to the Malay community, ‘Timah’ is an abbreviation of Fatimah, the name of the daughter of Prophet Muhammad, who is highly respected by Muslims.
“Therefore, branding the whiskey as ‘Timah’ is considered by Muslims as an insult that should not have happened,” he stressed.
“We do not object to non-Muslims drinking alcohol, but we ask the Malaysian government to order the beverage business to alter its brand and the image on the bottle to something that does not offend Muslims.”
“We also hope that the country’s political leaders, particularly Muslims, would express their outrage at the alcoholic beverage company’s callous conduct,” he added.
