The Struggles of Stateless Individuals in Malaysia Due to Citizenship Law Amendments

By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran,

7th September 2024 – Stateless individuals in Malaysia face significant challenges due to the country’s citizenship laws.

Many are unable to access basic rights like education and employment, as seen in cases where individuals were denied school examinations and civil service opportunities.

An upcoming amendment could further complicate their situation by lowering the age limit for citizenship applications from 21 to 18 years, potentially leaving many without a clear path to citizenship.

Advocacy groups urge the government to establish a defined route for stateless individuals over 18 years old, as stated in Malaymail.
