Thulsi Manogaran Calls for Fairness in Mandatory Halal Certification Debate

10 SEPTEMBER: The recent proposal by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) to make halal certification mandatory for all food establishments has drawn significant reactions. While JAKIM’s intent is to ensure the quality and adherence to halal standards for Muslim consumers, the issue has sparked concerns over fairness and freedom of choice within the business community.
Thulsi Manogaran, the State Assemblyman (ADUN) for Buntong, has voiced her stance against politicizing or racializing the halal certification issue. She stressed that requiring compulsory halal certification for businesses, regardless of their owners’ faith, is unjust. “Voluntary compliance must be respected, especially in business sectors where market demand drives decisions,” she said.
Thulsi also expressed disappointment with the way this issue was handled, noting that the proposal should have been discussed at the Cabinet level before being announced publicly. She believes this oversight has created unnecessary confusion and concern.
In defense of Member of Parliament (MP) for Seputeh, YB Teresa Kok, Thulsi called the investigation into her criticisms of the proposal unfair and legally questionable. She reaffirmed the importance of respecting MPs’ right to voice their concerns in a democratic system.
Thulsi further criticized UMNO Youth Chief, Datuk Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh, for fuelling racial sentiments without providing constructive solutions. She also highlighted Akmal’s silence on critical issues like the government’s ‘DNS re-routing’ policy, which threatens citizens’ privacy.
Thulsi urged a more mature, open discussion about the impact of the proposed mandatory halal certification, calling for comprehensive dialogue involving all stakeholders. This, she believes, is essential to achieving a fair resolution that considers the interests of various communities without escalating tensions.
