Tom Holland Reveals He and Zendaya Have Read a ‘Spider-Man 4’ Script, But Says It “Needs Work”

By Pavethran Batmanathen

Tom Holland is brimming with excitement about the future of Spider-Man 4, revealing that he and his co-star and girlfriend, Zendaya, recently read a draft of the script. The pair went over the script just a few weeks ago, but Holland admits that while there’s a lot to be excited about, some fine-tuning is still necessary.

In an appearance on the Rich Roll Podcast, Holland shared his thoughts on the project, stating, “It needs work, but the writers are doing a fantastic job.” His comments follow a report from The Hollywood Reporter last month, which revealed that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is in discussions to helm the fourth Spider-Man film, taking over from Jon Watts, who directed the previous trilogy.

Holland also discussed the complexity of developing a Spider-Man sequel within the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), explaining how every film is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. “One of the things to keep in mind with Marvel is that your film is a small cog in a large machine,” Holland said. “That machine has to keep running, and you need to ensure that your project fits into the timeline in a way that benefits the bigger picture. That’s one of the challenges we’re facing right now. The window in which we need to get this done is tight, but with the amazing team working on it, it’s definitely achievable.”

The Crowded Room star expressed enthusiasm about the creative process behind Spider-Man 4, noting that the film already has a solid pitch and draft in place. “It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job,” Holland reiterated. “I read it three weeks ago, and it really sparked something in me. Zendaya and I sat down to go through it, and at times, we were literally bouncing around the room, thinking, ‘This feels like a real movie that fans will respect.’ However, there are still a few things we need to figure out before we can move forward, but the whole process is very exciting.”

Holland has portrayed Peter Parker/Spider-Man in three stand-alone films alongside Zendaya, who plays MJ: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). He has also appeared in other key Marvel films like Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), solidifying his place in the MCU.

Despite his enthusiasm for the character, Holland has previously shared that he is cautious about returning to the role unless the story does justice to Spider-Man. Speaking to Collider last year, the actor said, “I feel very protective over Spider-Man. I feel incredibly lucky that we’ve been part of a franchise that improved with each film and became more successful with each installment, which is quite rare. I want to safeguard that legacy. So, I won’t make another one just for the sake of it. The storyline has to be worthwhile for the character.”

With the excitement building around Spider-Man 4, it’s clear that Holland remains committed to ensuring the next installment lives up to both the fans’ expectations and the high bar set by the previous films.
