Traditional Naiveidhiya for Navarathiri 2024
By Subaashinee Kupusamy,
5 OCTOBER: Navarathiri, a nine-day festival celebrating Goddess Durga, features various offerings (naiveidhiya) to honor the deity. These offerings enhance the devotional atmosphere with their symbolic and cultural significance.
Panchamirtham, a mix of jaggery, banana, ghee, honey, and cardamom, is a sacred dish. Pongal, a staple offering, comes in different varieties, symbolizing prosperity. Kesari, known for its rich golden color, brings sweetness to the occasion, while Payasam, a creamy dessert, adds a festive touch.
For savory options, Medu Vadai and Paruppu Vadai are crispy fritters often prepared, along with Kondaikadalai Sundal, a protein-rich snack made from chickpeas. These dishes are not only offerings but also treats enjoyed by devotees, making the celebration joyous and fulfilling as stated in Astro Ulagam.
