Tragic Death of Doctor in Kolkata: Raped and Murdered

Kolkata, India 15TH AUGUST : Another day of realisation that women are not safe, anywhere. On August 15, 2024, it will be 78 years since India’s independence but the primary question is what kind of freedom are we celebrating? Freedom to rape a woman at work? Freedom to frame a rape as a suicide? Freedom to silence voices speaking out against injustice?

The family of the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was brutally raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata described their heartbreaking reaction to hearing about the crime on August 9. ( Source Hindustan Times )

Her father discovered her additionally nude, and covered in broken glass in her eyes, limbs malformed, and a fractured pelvic girdle. She was also gushing blood. It is impossible to imagine her predicament in those last moments. After arriving at the crime scene, her parents were not allowed to see her lifeless body for three hours.

Her body contained 150 grams of semen, when a guy can only have 15 grams. They has identified a scapegoat. Dean said she was psychotic. The hospital underwent renovations following its transfer to CBI as stated in Hindustan Times.

Neither was she wearing clothes to attract rape, nor was she drunk at a party, but she was awake late night, she was in a seminar hall of her hospital late night during her 36 hours shift.

Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested in relation to the violent rape and death of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. Six hours had passed since the police established a seven-person Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter before the arrest. The strongest evidence against Sanjay Roy, the main suspect in the 31-year-old’s rape and murder, was found by detectives on Sunday as stated in The Indian Express

Let the statistics speak, 30% of India’s doctors and 80% of our nursing staff are women. In an environment of growing violence against medical personnel, it’s the women who are more vulnerable. Since 2022, there has been a 4% increase in crimes against women, over 20% of which involve rape and assault. Nearly 90 rapes a day were reported in India in 2022. The National Eligibility Admission Test (NEET) is administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The most difficult entrance exam in India is for those who want to enrol in BDS and MBBS programs in Indian dental and medical academies. The educational and training requirements for becoming a doctor in India are highly stringent, and the procedure often takes ten years to complete. From the institutional bodies that sets exam to make us doctor, to the nation we strive to serve.

Don’t tell women to change their path- change the terrain.
