Two Perak Policemen Suspended Over Drug and Ketum Abuse

19th September 2024 – On September 18, 2024, two policemen from Perak were suspended from duty following their involvement in drug and ketum abuse. Perak police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris confirmed that the two officers, aged 41 and 39, were arrested on September 13 and remanded under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Poisons Act 1952.
This suspension followed a raid in Tanjung Rambutan conducted by Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS). The raid uncovered their involvement in processing and selling ketum water and dealing in contraband cigarettes. Investigations are ongoing, with disciplinary action being taken.
The suspension was part of a broader move to uphold discipline within the police force, and further actions will depend on the outcome of the investigation. The involvement of law enforcement in illegal activities has raised concerns, emphasizing the need for stringent measures to maintain integrity within the force.
The raid, conducted at 1:30 a.m., involved seven officers, including the two now suspended, who were found at a house processing ketum water, which is derived from the ketum plant (Mitragyna speciosa). This plant, common in Southeast Asia, is known for its medicinal uses but is illegal in Malaysia for its psychoactive properties.
The two officers were also implicated in smuggling operations involving contraband cigarettes, evading duties on the products. Authorities are expected to uncover more details as the investigation progresses.
Datuk Azizi stressed that no officer is above the law and disciplinary actions, including suspensions, would be enforced to preserve the integrity of the police. This case has cast a spotlight on internal corruption and the need for continued efforts to root out rogue officers within the force, ensuring public trust in law enforcement remains intact, as stated in Malaymail.
