By Agathes Kuma

Kuala Lumpur, June 13: An unemployed man was condemned to three years in prison and fined RM5, 000 by the Sessions Court for setting fire to his home around two years ago while his wife and children were still inside. It is also stated that he would have served an additional six months in jail, if he did not pay the fee.

Sedin Martin was found guilty of mischief by fire or incendiary material with the intent to damage property under Section 436 of the Penal Code on Tuesday (June 13) following a complete trial; Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus announced the verdict.

The charge carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence and a fine for guilt.

After determining that the prosecution had established its case above a rational doubt, Primus handed down the sentence.

Primus stated at the sentence that Sedin was guilty of a major crime since he had set the fire even when his wife and kids were there, as stated by The Star

Sedin was a first-time offender who was undergoing treatment for a brain injury at a hospital, therefore Sedin’s attorney, Khairudin Noordin, pleaded for the court to show him pity during mitigation.

Yet, Deputy Public Prosecutor Tham Pou Jin requested the court to impose a severe penalty to teach the accused a lesson and discourage future offenders
