21st September 2024: In light of the Mahkota state by-election, the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education has announced that new students from public universities can delay their registration process to cast their ballots.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir stated that this allowance is part of the government’s efforts to facilitate the democratic participation of students. Registration can now be completed by September 29, 2024. Twelve universities are involved in this initiative, providing students with the flexibility to vote on September 28.
Students must notify their respective student affairs departments to manage their delayed registration and ensure smooth transitions.
The Mahkota state by-election, triggered by the resignation of an assembly member, has seen increased attention from various groups, including university students eligible to vote. This move by the government highlights the importance of youth participation in the democratic process and ensures that students do not miss their chance to engage in the election while transitioning into university life.
The universities involved in the program have already issued guidelines and are ready to accommodate the students’ delayed registration. Dr. Zambry also emphasized that universities are committed to supporting students through this process and ensuring minimal disruption to their academic schedules.
Students are encouraged to contact their institutions directly for detailed instructions on handling the registration process while fulfilling their civic responsibilities.
This effort reflects the government’s commitment to both education and democratic engagement, enabling young voters to participate in shaping the nation’s future without compromising their academic pursuits, as stated in The Star.
