KOLKATA, INDIA 20TH AUGUST: The mother of the 31-year-old junior doctor who was sexually assaulted and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of trying to suppress protests against the crime. She also criticized the Kolkata police for a flawed investigation.
“Only one person has been arrested, but more hospital staff are likely involved. I believe the chief minister is trying to stop the protests,” the mother said at their North 24 Parganas home, adding that police imposed prohibitory orders to prevent gatherings
“The police failed to investigate thoroughly and were uncooperative. Their main goal was to close the case quickly, rushing the autopsy and cremation,” she said. “We are a poor family, and she worked hard to become a doctor. All our dreams were shattered in one night. She didn’t study to be treated like this.”
“You couldn’t defeat her. She lives on within the walls of patriarchy in medical colleges across India, breaking through barriers. You’ll see her in every girl who dares to put ‘Dr.’ before her name, in every ward, ICU, and classroom where you tried to silence her. We will ensure you never forget her.”
As Maya Angelou wrote, “You may shoot me with your words…but still, like air, I’ll rise.”
Whenever something worse happens, we always hope: for justice, for change, for a better India. But in the end, we still hope that one day we’ll create a better nation.
