Wayanad Landslide Tragedy: Rescue Operations Underway

Kuala Lumpur, 2 August 2024 – A series of devastating landslides struck the Wayanad district of Kerala on July 30, 2024, causing massive destruction. Triggered by torrential rains, these landslides occurred in the Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Meppadi areas. The disaster has claimed over 143 lives, with hundreds more feared trapped beneath the debris.
Rescue operations are ongoing, involving the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, Fireforce, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Additional NDRF teams are being dispatched to assist in the efforts. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has extended support by sending rescue teams and medical personnel, and has announced financial aid of Rs 5 crores for rescue and rehabilitation. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also pledged assistance, expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss of life.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy rains, leading to the closure of schools and colleges in Wayanad and nearby districts as a precautionary measure. The situation remains critical, with rescue teams working tirelessly to locate and save those still trapped. – as stated in the new Indian Express
