On Friday night in eastern India, three trains were involved in a terrible accident that left 275 people dead and 1,000 injured. India, whose huge train network transports 22 million people daily over 67,000 miles of railway, has had some of the worst transport accidents in its history.
Three distinct trains were involved in the crash. The Coromandel Express train, carrying passengers travelling along India’s eastern coast, took the wrong track and collided with a goods train on Friday at 7 p.m. local time in the country’s eastern Odisha state. The two trains that had crashed were soon after hit by the Superfast Express, which was carrying about 1,000 passengers. There was a Superfast Express service between Bangalore and Howrah. The Indian Railways’ flagship Coromandel Express train was making its journey from Howrah to Chennai.
The inquiry is still ongoing. Early reports, according to railway officials, indicate the issue may be connected to problems with railroad signaling intended to tell vehicles to stop, slow down, or switch to another track.
Indian authorities are looking into what caused the incident. The prime minister of India reportedly added, “Whoever is found guilty will not be spared,” according to the Indian news agency ANI.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared that each family of the victims will receive $12,000 in addition to $2,400 and $600 for “grievous” and “minor” injuries, respectively. Saturday has been designated a day of mourning by the Odisha state government.
