KUALA LUMPUR, 5 August: A Malaysian court has ruled that preacher Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu must pay RM100,000 each to activist Arun Dorasamy and lawyer Siti Kasim for defamation. The decision stems from defamatory remarks made by Zamri in his sermons and online postings, which damaged the reputations of Arun and Siti.
The court emphasized the need for public figures to be mindful of their statements, especially when they can harm others’ reputations. This case highlights the legal consequences of defamation in Malaysia, reinforcing that free speech does not extend to spreading false information that injures another’s character.
Arun and Siti had filed separate lawsuits against Zamri, highlighting how his false accusations had caused them significant distress and harm. The court’s decision to award each plaintiff RM100,000 is seen as a victory for upholding justice and the integrity of individuals’ reputations. It also serves as a deterrent to others who might misuse their platform to defame others.
This ruling is a significant reminder of the importance of responsible communication and the protection of individual rights against baseless attacks. It reaffirms the judicial system’s role in addressing grievances arising from defamatory statements and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable as stated in FMT.
