‘Abang Adik’ Chosen to Represent Malaysia for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards

The film Abang Adik continues to gain widespread recognition as it has been chosen to represent Malaysia at the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category, as announced by the National Film Development Corporation (Finas).
In a statement, Finas shared that director Jin Ong’s debut feature film was selected after a rigorous evaluation process conducted by its Film Selection Committee, made up of professionals from the film industry. This process adhered to the strict guidelines set by the Oscars organiser for international submissions.
Produced by More Entertainments Sdn Bhd, Abang Adik boasts standout performances from Malaysian actor Jack Tan and Taiwan’s Kang Ren Wu. The film has already earned an impressive 19 international awards, a testament to Malaysia’s ability to compete and excel on the global stage, Finas noted. Abang Adik claimed the title of Best Film at the Asia New York Film Festival’s 22nd Uncaged Competition and took home multiple accolades at the 25th Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy.
These included the prestigious Golden Mulberry, the Black Dragon Critics’ Award, and the White Mulberry Award for Best Feature Film.In China, the film has also made a significant impact, with box office earnings reaching RM2.2 million as of September 30, 2024, following its release on September 21, 2024.
The statement also highlighted the film’s earlier success in 2023, where it became a box office phenomenon in Taiwan, grossing RM14.6 million, and in Hong Kong, where it earned RM1.55 million. This achievement marked Abang Adik as the first Malaysian film to set record-breaking screenings in both countries.
On the domestic front, Abang Adik secured major wins at the Malaysia Golden Global Awards 2024, with the film taking home the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor awards. The movie’s release in Malaysia in December last year also saw strong box office performance, generating RM5.7 million in earnings. — Bernama
