According to unidentified sources cited by Japan’s Nikkei newspaper on Tuesday, Apple will completely abandon liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in favor of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays for all iPhone models sold in 2025 and later.
OLED displays are replacing LCD displays in televisions and smartphones because they produce higher contrast and more vibrant colours, which are perfect for high-definition entertainment.

According to Nikkei, the proposed measure will keep Japan’s Sharp Corp. and Japan Display out of Apple’s phone market. Nikkei reports that Apple has started ordering OLED screens from South Korea’s LG Display and China’s BOE Technology for the next iPhone SE model. According to the survey, whereas Sharp and Japan Display together accounted for around 70% of the market share for iPhone displays a decade ago, they only supplied LCDs for the iPhone SE lately and do not now mass-produce OLED displays for smartphones.

Since the 2017 release of the iPhone X, Apple has moved to using OLED displays in its higher-end iPhone models. The business added OLED screens to the most recent iPad Pro models, which were released in May. In answer to questions from Reuters, Sharp, Japan Display, and LG Display declined to comment. Apple did not answer a request for comment right away.
