Citizens of Gotham, cast your gaze upon Hollywood Boulevard! The iconic Caped Crusader, Batman, has officially been honored with his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
On September 26, the Dark Knight was recognized with one of Hollywood’s highest honors during a special ceremony. What started in 1960 with eight stars along a modest stretch of sidewalk at Hollywood Boulevard and Gower Street now stretches 1.3 miles, covering 2,789 stars.
Batman’s star, the 2,790th, is prominently placed at the bustling corner of Hollywood and Highland, right outside the Guinness World Records Museum.“Batman is one of the most iconic characters in the world, representing justice, strength, and fearlessness,” said Steve Nissen, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, as he kicked off the event.
“For over 85 years, Batman has been a constant in comic books, cartoons, TV shows, movies, toys, and video games. He’s everywhere, and now he’s the first superhero to receive his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“Nissen was joined by several key figures to celebrate this monumental occasion, including Chamber of Commerce board chair Sarah Zurell, DC Comics’ president, publisher, and CEO Jim Lee, the company’s SVP and general manager Anna DePies, Los Angeles City Council District 13 representative Hugo Soto-Martínez, and Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empric.
Empric presented Jim Lee with Batman’s official Guinness title, solidifying his place in history as the first superhero to earn a star on the Walk of Fame.In line with tradition at Walk of Fame ceremonies for fictional characters, a fully costumed Batman silently presided over the event, posing for photos alongside the speakers and his newly minted star.
It’s a rare honor to see a fictional character receive a star on the Walk of Fame. Batman is only the 20th fictional figure to earn this distinction. Out of 2,789 stars, fewer than 0.01% have gone to fictional characters, making this achievement all the more historic. The first fictional character to receive a star was Mickey Mouse, a full 18 years after the Walk of Fame was established, a nod to the significance of characters that have defined pop culture.
Since then, the remaining stars have been awarded to unforgettable TV families, animated animal companions, and live-action characters who have become larger than life, even beyond the actors who portrayed them.To celebrate this moment in entertainment history, let’s take a stroll through the Walk of Fame and revisit the fictional characters whose stars shine bright on Hollywood Boulevard.
