20th September 2024: The flood situation in Kedah has escalated, with the number of evacuees rising to 6,087 across 36 temporary relief centers (PPS) as of 7:30 AM. The victims represent 1,942 families from seven districts, a sharp increase from the 5,483 evacuees reported the previous night
In response, three more PPS centers were opened to accommodate the growing numbers. The districts most affected include Kota Setar with 2,424 victims, Kubang Pasu, and Pokok Sena. Notably, Kota Setar saw the highest surge, housing evacuees in 11 PPS.
Kubang Pasu also experienced a spike, with nine operational PPS now sheltering 1,537 people. Pokok Sena’s numbers increased to 925 evacuees, necessitating the opening of a fifth center. Other districts like Pendang, Kuala Muda, and Kulim also reported a rise in the number of displaced families.
The Public Infobanjir website from the Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS) reported six rivers in the Kota Setar and Kubang Pasu districts exceeding dangerous levels, contributing to the worsening situation. Among them are Sungai Padang Terap and Sungai Kedah, showing rising water levels.
Efforts are ongoing to manage the influx of evacuees as floodwaters continue to rise across the state, as stated in Buletin TV3.
