18 SEPTEMBER: Dr. Tay Tien Yaa, a 25-year-old pathology specialist at Lahad Datu Hospital in Sabah, tragically died by suicide on August 29, 2024. Despite her dedication to improving healthcare, her death has raised serious concerns about workplace bullying in the medical profession.
Dr. Tay, who had recently married, was appointed as head of the Chemical Pathology Unit. However, her family revealed that she faced significant work pressures from her supervisor, which led to overwhelming stress.
Her brother alleged that Dr. Tay was forced to handle duties beyond her official role and endure a toxic environment. These claims have reignited discussions about the mental health struggles young medical professionals face. Many have pointed to the high expectations and workload placed on junior doctors, contributing to burnout and psychological distress.
Dr. Tay’s passing has intensified calls for reforms to address bullying, toxic work culture, and mental health issues within healthcare settings. Medical professionals and advocates have urged institutions to implement stronger support systems and better management practices to prevent further tragedies. The case has left many demanding accountability and a more compassionate approach to handling workplace grievances in the medical field as stated in Astro Ulagam.
