14 SEPTEMBER: A former HR manager of a private company lost RM137,250 after falling victim to an online job scam.
Seri Alam District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Sohaimi Ishak, said the 48-year-old woman reported the incident after accepting a job offer advertised on Facebook in August. She was promised commissions ranging from five to 25 percent of the amount she invested for each task completed.
According to Mohd Sohaimi, the woman was instructed to register on an app called “Gmarket.” Her role was to pay for goods using her own money first, with the promise that she would be reimbursed along with a commission once the sale was finalized.
Attracted by the high commissions, the victim made 24 transactions, converting RM137,250 into digital currency via three different applications. She then transferred the money to several e-wallet accounts, completing 38 sales tasks.
Initially, she noticed her money being returned with commissions in the app. However, suspicion arose when the scammers asked for additional payments, preventing her from withdrawing her funds.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud. Mohd Sohaimi urged the public to be cautious of online job offers promising quick profits as stated in BULETIN TV3 .
