Hanged to death (mentally unstable) – Malaysian at Singapore in a week

By Sharunya Raja

KUALA LUMPUR, April 21: Despite a worldwide uproar over his case, a mentally challenged Malaysian man will be hung in Singapore next week, according to his sister.

Based on Malaymail, Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam was caught in 2009 for smuggling a minor amount of heroin into the city-state, which has some of the strictest drug prohibitions in the world and was sentenced to death the following year.

However, due to worries about his intellectual disability, the decision to hang him drew global condemnation, with the European Union and British entrepreneur Richard Branson among many who spoke out against it.

Nagean lost his final appeal last month, when judges dismissed concerns that killing a man with mental problems violates international law, after a years-long legal struggle, stated on Malaymail

His sister, Sarmila Dharmalingam, told AFP that his family has been notified that he would be killed on Wednesday next week. She claimed that members of his family, including his mother and three siblings, will come to the city-state ahead of time to meet him.

Nagaenthran’s impending death, according to M Ravi, a Singapore-based human rights lawyer aiding in the case, is “heartbreaking”.

“The Singapore state will never be able to recover from the disgrace it’s going to face internationally in hanging an intellectually disabled person,” he said in a social media post.
