Huawei Plans 5nm Kirin Chip for Future Smartphones

By Pavethran Batmanathen,

Huawei is reportedly preparing to introduce a 5nm Kirin chipset for its upcoming flagship smartphones, aiming to enhance performance and efficiency. According to a leak from Weibo tipster @SmartChipConsultant, the new chip will utilize an N+2 process, an advanced version of the 7nm node, offering improved power efficiency and processing speeds. However, the chip is not expected to enter commercial use until at least 2026, as Huawei continues to face challenges in accessing advanced semiconductor manufacturing technologies.

Currently, Huawei’s latest devices, such as the Mate 70 Pro+, are powered by the Kirin 9020 processor, which is built on Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp.’s (SMIC) 7nm N+2 process. This marks a continuation of Huawei’s reliance on domestic chip production, as U.S. sanctions have limited its access to advanced fabrication technologies from companies like TSMC and Samsung. Despite these constraints, Huawei has managed to develop competitive chipsets, though the pace of advancement has slowed compared to industry leaders.

The anticipated 5nm Kirin chip is expected to deliver significant improvements in device performance, battery life, and reduced latency. However, the timeline for its release remains uncertain, contingent on overcoming ongoing technological and geopolitical challenges.
