Human Rights and Constitutional Rights Debate Competition! – UMHV
Kuala Lumpur, 30th July; On the 20th of July 2024, a significant event in the realm of youth empowerment and legal education took place at Brickfields Asia College. United Malaysian Hindu Voice,United Malaysian Hindu Youth Fellowship and the United Malaysian Hindu Students League, in collaboration with Brickfields Asia College organized a Human Rights and Constitutional Rights Debate Competition. This event was tailored for Hindu SPM/STPM leavers and IPTA/IPTS students, drawing participation from a multitude of universities across the country.
The competition was graced by the esteemed presence of Yang Arif Tan Sri Datuk Nallini Pathmanathan, a judge from the Federal Court, who served as the judge for the final round. Her presence and insight provided an invaluable experience for all participants and attendees. Additionally, lawyers from various law firms and solicitors contributed their expertise as judges throughout the competition, ensuring a fair and rigorous assessment of the debating skills showcased.
The event concluded with United Malaysian Hindu Voice emerging as the champions, securing the United Malaysian Hindu Voice Perpetual Excellence Trophy along with a cash prize of RM1000. Universiti Malaya earned the second prize, while the United Malaysian Hindu Youth Fellowship received the consolation prize.
In her inauguration speech, Yang Arif Tan Sri Datuk Nallini Pathmanathan emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating, “Youth engagements like this are crucial for raising awareness and fostering a deeper understanding of our constitutional rights and human rights within our society. It is heartening to see young minds actively participating and debating on such critical issues.”
The primary objective of this debate competition was to instill a thorough understanding of human rights and constitutional rights among the youth, encouraging them to think critically and articulate their perspectives on these vital issues. By fostering such discussions, the organizers aim to cultivate informed, responsible, and proactive citizens who can contribute meaningfully to the nation’s discourse on rights and justice.
The event was a resounding success, not only in terms of participation and execution but also in achieving its goal of enlightening and empowering the youth. The collaborative efforts of the United Malaysian Hindu Voice, United Malaysian Hindu Youth Fellowship, United Malaysian Hindu Students League, and Brickfields Asia College have set a commendable precedent for future initiatives aimed at youth development and legal education.
