JPJ Seizes 21 Illegal Taxis in Klang Valley

By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran

13th September 2024 – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) seized 21 illegal taxis operating in the Klang Valley during an enforcement operation. JPJ’s deputy director-general, Aedy Fadly Ramli, said the taxis, also known as “kereta sapu,” were providing unlicensed public transportation services.

These illegal operators often charge lower rates than registered taxis, posing a threat to legal taxi drivers and causing inconvenience to passengers.

The operation, which took place over two days, aimed to curb illegal transportation activities and protect the interests of legal taxi operators. JPJ has been focusing on areas where illegal taxis are commonly found, such as transportation hubs and popular commercial districts.

Aedy Fadly also warned that operating an illegal taxi is a serious offense under the Road Transport Act 1987, which can result in fines of up to RM10,000 or jail terms. He urged the public to use registered taxis or e-hailing services to ensure their safety and avoid legal complications.

The department is working closely with other agencies like the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) and the police to identify and take action against illegal taxi operators. The public is also encouraged to report any illegal taxi services to the authorities.

JPJ will continue its enforcement efforts to ensure public safety and maintain fair competition in the transportation industry, as stated in the Star.
