PETALING JAYA, 20 June 2025: Malaysia has reported its first Covid-19 fatality of 2025, occurring during Epidemiological Week 24, from June 8 to 15. The Health Ministry confirmed the death on Thursday, June 19, noting the individual suffered from significant comorbidities, including heart disease and diabetes, and had not received their second booster vaccine dose.

This isolated death represents a dramatic decrease compared to the 57 Covid-19 related fatalities recorded throughout 2024, with the last death prior to this year occurring on May 26, 2024. The Ministry attributes this significant reduction to effective control measures implemented previously.

During the same Epidemiological Week 24, six Covid-19 patients with comorbidities required admission to intensive care units (ICUs). All these cases received intensive care and have since been discharged from the ICU, with four returning home and two transferred to normal wards.

While the overall situation remains controlled, the Ministry reported an increase in new Covid-19 cases for Week 24. A total of 3,379 cases were recorded, marking a 68% rise from the 2,011 cases reported in the preceding week. Cumulatively, Malaysia has registered 21,738 Covid-19 cases to date. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure public health safety.
