Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized that Malaysia is becoming more selective in accepting foreign direct investments, with a particular focus on projects that bring significant benefits to the nation, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and data technology sectors.
Speaking at the Ilmuan Malaysia Madani Forum, hosted by Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Anwar explained that traditional data centres, which once relied on inexpensive energy and water to run and cool their systems, are no longer sufficient for modern needs. He highlighted the necessity of incorporating AI into these centres, citing Nvidia’s project in Johor as an example of how technology must evolve to remain competitive and relevant.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of empowering local universities to cultivate a highly skilled workforce, especially in the fields of AI and engineering, in order to meet the demands of high-tech investors.
Anwar noted that Malaysia’s approach to foreign investment has shifted towards prioritizing projects that offer substantial benefits to the country, particularly those that align with the nation’s technological advancement goals. “We are now more selective in choosing investments that can benefit the country more,” he said.
In addition to discussing foreign investments, Anwar also touched on the national budget, highlighting education and healthcare as key priorities. He mentioned that the education sector would receive the largest portion of the budget, followed closely by healthcare.
