4 SEPTEMBER: Police have arrested three members of the ‘Geng Ah Meng’ syndicate and seized a large quantity of counterfeit liquor in raids conducted at two factories in Taman Johor and Taman Kempas Utama on Monday and Tuesday.
Johor Bahru Utara District Police Chief, ACP Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh, stated that the suspects, aged between 44 and 50, are believed to have been operating the illegal business for approximately six months.
“In the first raid, police confiscated several items, including 564 boxes of liquor, two plastic drums, four electric pumps, and a package of ‘duty paid’ customs stickers, all valued at RM850,000.
“In the second raid, items seized included a three-ton lorry, five cars, 18 packages of branded liquor bottle stickers, and two ‘duty paid’ customs stickers, with a total value of RM400,000. The overall seizure from both locations is estimated at RM1.25 million,” Balveer Singh said during a press conference today.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the first factory was used for processing and distributing counterfeit liquor around the city, while the second factory served as a storage facility.
The suspects tested negative for drugs; however, one of them has a prior criminal record related to illegal gambling.
The three men have been remanded until next Monday and Tuesday for further investigation under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 76 of the Excise Act 1976.
Balveer Singh also mentioned that police are pursuing two more local men, aged 48 and 50, one of whom is believed to be the mastermind behind the ‘Geng Ah Meng’ operation as stated in BULETIN TV3.
