Prioritizing Unity and Economy over Race and Religion in Malaysia

23rd September 2024: S Shashi Kumar, president of the Global Human Rights Federation, stressed that nations focusing on racial and religious divisions struggle to succeed. In an interview with Malaysiakini, he pointed out that economically developed nations prioritize growth and innovation, while countries embroiled in divisive politics, such as Bangladesh and Pakistan, face stagnation.
Shashi urged Malaysia to look towards nations like Singapore, which focus on economic development and unity, as models for success. He emphasized that without shifting the national focus towards growth, Malaysia risks further delays in achieving its development goals. He also criticized political figures for exploiting race and religion to gain power, warning that such tactics undermine the country’s potential.
The need for a united national identity, according to Shashi, is critical for attracting investors and fostering progress. By setting aside divisive issues and concentrating on economic advancement, Malaysia can position itself for long-term success and prosperity.
Shashi’s appeal is particularly relevant as Malaysia approaches significant political changes. He encouraged Malaysians to hold their leaders accountable for focusing on issues that truly benefit the nation, rather than allowing divisive politics to dominate the discourse. According to Shashi, the country must prioritize unity, innovation, and economic growth to build a better future. His call to action aims to redirect Malaysia’s political and social focus toward progress, leaving behind issues that hinder national cohesion and development, as stated in Malaysia Kini.
