KLANG, June 3: United Malaysian Hindu Voice (UMHV) has condemned the Klang Municipal Council’s (MPK) decision to rename Padang Chetty to Dataran Majlis Perbandaran Klang.

“We condemn the Klang Municipal Council’s decision to change the name of Padang Chetty at Jalan Bukit Jawa in the Little India Klang area to Dataran Majlis Perbandaran Klang,” says the UMHV chairman P. Navindran.

Navindran described the decision as “unreasonable” as Padang Chetty has cultural and historical value.

“The name is also very close to Malaysians and particularly to the Indian community in Klang who have been there for more than 100 years now.

“The Indian community is very upset and disappointed as the action of the Klang Municipal Council is akin to ruining the heritage and forgetting the contributions of the Indian community in Klang.

“We hope this is not a special gift from Pakatan Harapan Selangor Government to the Indian community in Selangor especially during these tough times as we are facing the Covid -19 pandemic,” he added.

Navindran also urged Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to intervene and retain the Padang Chetty name. It is a heritage site that has a fairly high historical value to the Indian community of Malaysia.

“I am very confident that YAB Datuk Menteri Besar Selangor is a Chief Minister who is always concerned with the demands and requests of the people and will pay attention in resolving this issue to ensure the heritage sites of the Indian community in Klang continues to be reserved for the future generations,” he added.
