21st September 2024: A tragic incident occurred on 19 September 2024, when two-year-old Nur Aisha Misya Afifah Abdul Fattah drowned after falling into a flooded drain in Lorong Seri, Jalan Langgar, Kedah.
Her grandfather, Mohd Hamidan Hashim, 38, found her body, initially mistaking it for a floating doll. Heavy rains caused the drain to overflow, leading to the toddler’s disappearance.
Despite efforts by villagers to locate her, Nur Aisha’s body surfaced hours later. Her mother, Siti Nurfarhana, 18, expressed her sorrow, stating that she hadn’t realized her daughter had wandered off. Nur Aisha will be laid to rest at Masjid Al Irfan Islamic Cemetery.
Villagers, including Yahmin Sairin, aided in the search but were hampered by strong currents.
Yahmin, 70, recounted his attempts to find the child in the deep drain he had built 12 years ago, saying he had never expected the floodwaters to reach such a level. Despite the efforts of many, including divers, the discovery of the girl’s body brought an end to the frantic search.
Hamidan shared his grief at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital’s Forensic Department, stating that he has come to terms with her passing, despite the devastating circumstances. The loss has left a deep impact on the community, who never expected such a tragedy during the seasonal floods.
Nur Aisha’s untimely passing serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers posed by flash floods, particularly in areas prone to heavy rains and overflow from nearby rivers. Her family and villagers are mourning her loss as they prepare for her burial later in the day, as stated in Says.
