6 MARCH: Ms Usha Muthusamy, the vice secretary of United Malaysian Hindu Voice (UMHV), has released a press statement condemning the disgraceful and offensive act by three ERA FM radio hosts who mocked the sacred Thaipusam Kavadi ritual by chanting ‘Vel Vel’ in jest, calling for immediate action, disciplinary measures, and systemic changes to prevent future religious disrespect.
The press statement was released on March 4, 2025.
In the press release mentioned, the Kavadi ritual is a deeply spiritual vow of devotion to Lord Muruga, symbolizing faith, penance, and gratitude. For it to be ridiculed on a public platform is unacceptable. The casual disrespect shown in the video has rightly triggered nationwide outrage, and UMHV asserts that mere apologies and temporary suspensions are insufficient to address this grave matter.
UMHV is calling for a thorough investigation and meaningful disciplinary actions. We seek systemic change through comprehensive cultural sensitivity training for media personnel, ensuring they develop a deep understanding and genuine respect for diverse religious practices. Era FM must publicly commit to strict protocols that prevent future instances of religious ridicule.
“Religious mockery is a serious offense that must not be trivialized as entertainment. If left unchecked, it sets a dangerous precedent where religious traditions can be ridiculed without consequence,” UMHV stated.
UMHV stands firm in demanding justice, accountability, and meaningful corrective measures. “We will persist until strict media regulations are enforced, responsible individuals face consequences, and a precedent is set that religious disrespect will never be tolerated in Malaysia,” says UMHV.
According to UMHV, they stand in solidarity with the Hindu community and all Malaysians who value mutual respect and understanding. “We trust that the relevant authorities will take appropriate measures to address this issue and to reinforce the importance of cultural sensitivity in our society,” mentioned UMHV.
“RESPECT FOR ALL RELIGIONS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE”
