By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran,

5th November: Kanda Sashti, celebrated in honor of Lord Murugan, is a significant festival for his devotees, particularly among Tamil Hindus. This festival occurs during the sixth phase of the moon in the Tamil month of Kartigai, usually falling in October or November. It commemorates Lord Murugan’s victory over the demon Surapadman, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

Central to this celebration is the Vel, a divine spear wielded by Lord Murugan. The Vel represents spiritual power and protection, serving as a tool for devotees to overcome obstacles and challenges in their lives. It is believed that worshipping the Vel can bestow strength, wisdom, and guidance.

During Kanda Sashti, devotees engage in various rituals, including fasting and prayers, to seek blessings from Lord Murugan. The festival culminates with a grand procession where devotees carry the Vel to temples, showcasing their devotion and reverence. This act signifies their surrender to the divine and their commitment to overcoming personal struggles.

Kanda Sashti not only reinforces faith among followers but also fosters a sense of community. Celebrations often include cultural performances, music, and dance, highlighting the rich traditions associated with Lord Murugan. Through these festivities, devotees express gratitude for his protection and guidance while reinforcing their spiritual connections, as stated in Astro Ulagam.
