7th November 2024: Soorasamharam is a significant festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu and surrounding areas, commemorating the victory of Lord Murugan over the demon Soorapadman. The legend begins with Lord Shiva, who, persuaded by the gods and Kama Deva, married Parvati. From their union, divine sparks emerged, which Parvati united in the Saravana pond, resulting in the birth of Lord Murugan.

Equipped with divine weapons, Murugan engaged in a fierce six-day battle against Soorapadman. When the demon transformed into a giant mango tree to evade defeat, Murugansplit it in two, creating his vehicle, the peacock, and the rooster symbolizing his banner. Following this victory, he also defeated other formidable demons like Tarakasura.

The main celebration occurs at the Thiruchendur MuruganTemple, one of the six Arupadai Veedu Temples, believed to be the site of Soorapadman’s defeat. Thousands gather on the seashore to witness reenactments of the battle, chanting “Vel VelVetrivel,” which evokes deep emotions among devotees. The festival culminates in Thirukalyanam, symbolizing the divine marriage of Lord Murugan and Deivanai, representing joy and harmony. This event serves as a powerful reminder of virtue’s triumph and divine intervention in restoring balance to the world, as stated in Astro Ulagam.
