Perodua to Launch First EV End of November, Hailed as National Agenda

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 November 2025: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that Perodua, Malaysia’s second national car manufacturer, is set to launch its highly anticipated first electric vehicle (EV) model by the end of November. The Prime Minister underscored the immense strategic importance of this launch, declaring Perodua’s EV development to be a crucial National Agenda item aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s commitment to green technology and sustainable mobility.

The launch is viewed as a landmark moment that will accelerate the domestic transition towards EVs, making electric mobility more accessible to the average Malaysian consumer. This move is aligned with the government’s broader economic and environmental goals to reduce carbon emissions and build a resilient local automotive ecosystem.

National and International Commitment

In a significant show of governmental backing, PM Anwar stated he would personally promote the Perodua EV at the upcoming G20 Summit in South Africa. This gesture elevates the domestic launch to an international platform, signalling Malaysia’s ambition to be a key player in the regional EV supply chain.

The focus on Perodua’s EV is a strategic move to leverage the company’s extensive local infrastructure and market penetration. By placing the EV launch under the national agenda, the government commits to providing necessary policy support, incentives, and infrastructure development to ensure the success and rapid adoption of the model.

Supporting EV Ecosystem Development

Meanwhile, the ecosystem supporting the EV transition is also gaining momentum:

  • BMW Group Malaysia has partnered with the Selangor Technical Development Centre (STDC) to launch a vocational education programme focused on EVs. This initiative aims to address the critical need for locally trained technicians and talent capable of maintaining and servicing the new generation of electric vehicles.

The combined efforts from Perodua’s product introduction to educational partnerships underscore a coordinated national effort to transition the country’s transport sector and workforce toward a sustainable, high-technology future.
