‘Puthiya Manitha’ – A Groundbreaking Initiative by UTM-KL Indian Undergraduates

BANTING: In a significant step toward nurturing future innovators, Persatuan Mahasiswa Hindu (PMH) Universiti Teknologi Malaysia-Kuala Lumpur (UTM-KL), in collaboration with the United Malaysian Hindu Voice (UMHV), hosted a transformative “UTM KL Robotic Workshop: Puthiya Manitha” for forty young minds at SJK(T) Telok Datok, Banting. The event aimed to cultivate a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through immersive, hands-on learning.

The day-long program was structured to provide a comprehensive introduction to robotics. It commenced with an energetic ice-breaker, followed by hands-on instruction on the basics of robotics using LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kits. Participants were introduced to the use of sensors for programming obstacle courses and building LEGO models of a robotic arm to perform specific tasks. Engagement was further solidified through a sensor-guessing game and a “Robot Mission Planner,” where students devised logical strategies for complex tasks. The workshop culminated in a spirited team competition, allowing students to apply their newly acquired skills.

The event’s success was widely praised by organizers and educators. According to Programme Director Ms Nehavathi and her deputy, Mr Virocchan, the core purpose was to equip the younger generation with robotics knowledge and actively promote its use and understanding.

Their sentiments were echoed by Dr. Pritheega Magalingam, Programme Advisor for Persatuan Mahasiswa Hindu (PMH) of UTM, who lauded the initiative as a valuable approach to enhancing the students’ competency in robotics. School educators also recognized the workshop’s value. The Assistnat Headmaster, Ms Parvathy, and the STEM Department Head, Ms. Ganthimathi expressed confidence that the event would better prepare their students for approaching AI systems and increase their technical knowledge. Both congratulated PMH of UTM and UMHV on the exceptional workshop.

Four Schools, 180 Students, Expanding Outreach Continuously

The ‘Puthiya Manitha’ team’s efforts have had a broader impact, reaching almost 180 students across four schools in the Klang Valley:

  • SJK(T) Batu Caves (April 18, 2025)
