TOKYO — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived here today to launch a crucial diplomatic mission. The three-day official visit runs from June 8 to 10, 2026. This trip focuses heavily on securing national energy security and driving high-value foreign investments back to Malaysia from Japan.
The visit comes at a vital time as the global energy market faces intense supply pressures. Therefore, Anwar is utilizing his administration’s signature “Madani Diplomacy” framework to build resilient, long-term partnerships. The mission aims to protect domestic economic interests while exploring new advancements in green technology.
During his stay, Anwar will hold a bilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The two leaders plan to review their existing Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Furthermore, they will witness the signing of four memorandums of cooperation and two letters of intent. These new agreements span critical sectors like energy transition, regional defense, digital technology, and higher education.
Economic ties between the two nations remain highly robust. Notably, Japan holds its ground as Malaysia’s fifth-largest global trading partner. Total bilateral trade reached RM142.96 billion in 2025. In addition, over 2,800 active manufacturing projects with Japanese participation currently support more than 347,000 Malaysian jobs. Anwar will connect directly with top corporate leaders during business roundtables to pitch fresh investment opportunities.
Apart from economic meetings, the Prime Minister will engage with international thinkers. He will deliver a keynote address at the prestigious 31st Nikkei Forum on the Future of Asia. Following that, he will present a public lecture at the University of Tokyo to discuss regional geopolitical challenges.
