Dependence on Veteran Athletes Hindering Malaysia’s Olympic Gold Aspirations

Kuala Lumpur, 13th August 2024 – Malaysia’s reliance on veteran athletes is cited as a key reason for the country’s ongoing failure to secure its first Olympic gold medal.

Sports analyst Asan Ahmad believes that Malaysia’s Olympic contingent continues to depend heavily on older athletes, like Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, instead of fostering new talent.

He argues that sports associations need to create effective programs to nurture young talents. The recent Paris 2024 Olympics saw Malaysia winning only two bronze medals in badminton, a performance seen as disappointing.

Asan also suggests it’s time to explore other sports and revamp the leadership in underperforming sports associations to improve future outcomes, as stated in Malaysia Kini.
