On Monday, the creators of Mookuthi Amman revealed that director Sundar C will take the reins for the sequel to the 2020 hit film. The announcement was accompanied by a poster featuring the tagline, “The Rise Of The Divine,” and confirmed that Nayanthara will be returning to reprise her role from the original movie.
The sequel will be produced through a collaboration between Vels Film International, Sundar C and Khushbu Sundar’s Avni Cinemax Pvt Limited, and Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan’s Rowdy Pictures. Details regarding the rest of the cast and the plot of the film have yet to be disclosed.
The original Mookuthi Amman, directed by RJ Balaji, starred RJ Balaji himself, along with Nayanthara and Oorvasi in prominent roles. RJ Balaji portrayed Engels Ramasamy, a beleaguered news anchor who juggles a difficult life with his single mother, three sisters, and a grandfather.
A visit to his family’s deity, Mookuthi Amman, transforms his life, though not without complications. The film, which debuted on Disney+ Hotstar on November 14, 2020, garnered both critical praise and commercial success.
