KUALA LUMPUR, 21 July 2025: Malaysian opposition parties are actively pursuing the formation of a cross-party front, a move aimed at significantly bolstering their capacity to provide robust checks and balances, both within and outside of parliament. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, leader of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition and former Prime Minister, announced this strategic initiative on his Facebook page, emphasizing its critical importance for unified decision-making on matters impacting the nation and its citizens.

Muhyiddin recently convened a pivotal meeting with various opposition leaders to discuss the proposal, which garnered positive feedback from attendees. Those present included prominent figures such as Opposition Leader Dato’ Seri Hamzah Zainudin, Gerakan Party President Dato’ Dr. Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, and Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) President Punithan Paramasivam. Other key participants were Pejuang Party President Dato’ Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, Urimai Party President Dr. P. Ramasamy, MAP Party President P. Vedamurthi, PSM Deputy Chairman S. Arutchelvan, PPP Youth Wing Leader Sathya Sudhakaran, Muda Acting President Amira Aisya Abd Aziz, Putra President Datuk Ibrahim Ali, and Berjasa President Zamani Ibrahim.

Notably, leaders from PAS, a significant component party of the Perikatan Nasional coalition, were absent from the meeting. PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden publicly stated he was not informed of the gathering, though he acknowledged the value of such discussions for strengthening the opposition’s collective efforts. This development underscores the complex dynamics within Malaysia’s opposition landscape as parties strive to present a more cohesive alternative to the current government. The proposed cross-party front aims to establish a common position on crucial national issues, with further details expected to be deliberated at the upcoming Perikatan Nasional Supreme Council Meeting.
