Widely celebrated as “Iyakkunar Imayam” (The Peak of Directors), Bharathiraja revolutionized Tamil cinema by introducing realistic portrayals of rural life and bringing village-based stories into the mainstream. His directorial debut, 16 Vayathinile (1977), marked a turning point in Tamil filmmaking and established him as a visionary storyteller.

Born as Chinnasaamy Periyamaya Thevar in Theni district, Tamil Nadu, Bharathiraja enjoyed a remarkable career spanning nearly five decades. Throughout his journey, he directed numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, earning six National Film Awards, multiple Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and the prestigious Padma Shri.
