Kuala Lumpur, April 21: Prabudass Krishnan, the national long-distance runner, has beaten his 1500m record thus becoming champion at 82nd Singapore Open Track & Field Championships 2022 in Singapore in mid of April at the Home of Athletics.
The 32-year-old Prabudass from Negeri Sembilan surpass his personal best 3:55.59 with 3:54.23s at the Kallang Sports Centre, winning gold ahead of Alfrence Braza of the Philippines (3:59.19) and Singapore’s S. Jeevaneesh (4:00.99). Prabudass’ time puts him among the favourites to achieve a gold medal in this event at the Sea Games. As per BERNAMA, he misplaced the Malaysian Grand Prix in April after becoming diagnosed with a viral fever. Prabudass’ father, G. Krishnan, was also a bronze medallist in the Southeast Asian Games and is remembered as the very first Malaysian to race the 5,000m in less than 15 minutes.
“It was a pleasant surprise to record a new PB. It is quite a remarkable feat to clock below four minutes, despite not competing regularly over the past two years,” said the champ to New Straits Times.
“My winning time looks overwhelming compared to the gold-medal-winning time at the Manila edition. However, it should not be used as an indicator as anything can happen in a race,” he added more. “I am definitely more confident heading to Hanoi. I will use the next few weeks to overcome my weaknesses,” said Prabudass.
