MDEC Appoints Tech Pioneer Ganesh Kumar Bangah as Non-Executive Chairman

PETALING JAYA — The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has appointed prominent technology entrepreneur and MOL Global Inc founder Ganesh Kumar Bangah as its non-executive chairman, marking a deliberate shift toward industry-led governance.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated that the appointment is designed to strengthen the agency’s capacity to translate national policy into direct corporate execution. Ganesh brings decades of experience founding technology ventures, scaling regional digital commerce platforms, and working alongside small businesses, entrepreneurs, and the broader tech ecosystem. At 45, he becomes the youngest chairman in MDEC’s history, signaling a strategic transition to anchor national policy with active private-sector practitioners.

The appointment has been widely welcomed across the domestic ecosystem. National Tech Association of Malaysia (PIKOM) Chairman Alex Liew noted that as a founder and builder who understands the direct operational challenges of scaling local technology companies, Ganesh brings the exact mix of credibility and market execution vision that MDEC needs to build sustainable local champions.

Ganesh faces immediate structural hurdles as he takes the helm. The transition occurs as the state accelerates its programs to shift Malaysia from basic digital adoption toward artificial intelligence implementation, targeting a full transition into an AI Nation by 2030. Industry analysts note that Ganesh’s primary challenge will involve dismantling traditional public-private silos to accelerate startup funding and streamline cross-border regulatory frameworks for local enterprise.

Ganesh has served as an MDEC board member since February 2025 and holds a concurrent board position at Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet). His prior institutional leadership includes serving as chairman of PIKOM and as a board member of the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC).
