Court Jails Former South Korean Minister For 25 Years

SEOUL — A South Korean district court gave a major ruling on Monday. Former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae received a 25-year prison sentence.

The court found him guilty of supporting an illegal military takeover. This happened during a brief martial law declaration in December 2024. Former President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered the lockdown back then.

The new sentence is longer than prosecutors had requested. They asked for 20 years, but the judge gave 25. The court locked up Park immediately after the trial ended. Judges feared he might destroy important case evidence if left free.

The prosecution showed that Park held secret meetings with officials. He told staff to get prison cells ready for arrested politicians. He also planned to deploy loyal prosecutors to help the military.

The court said Park abandoned his duty to protect the constitution. He chose to help a dangerous coup instead. Other top leaders face similar charges for backing the 2024 crisis. The former prime minister and defense minister were also convicted.
