JOHOR BAHRU — Early in-person voting for the 16th Johor state election got off to a swift start today, with turnout reaching 38.64% within the first two hours of polling, according to the Election Commission (EC).
Data published on the EC’s official Facebook page confirmed that 7,963 electors had cast their ballots by 10:00 AM. This initial voting wave consists entirely of frontline military personnel, police officers, and their respective spouses.
Staggered Operational Closures Across 64 Hubs A total of 64 designated early polling centres opened state-wide at 8:00 AM to accommodate the 20,607 personnel registered to vote in person today. This baseline excludes the remaining segment of the overall 24,751-strong early voting registry who are eligible to cast their ballots via postal streams.
Unlike standard polling days, these specialized service stations are scheduled to close progressively between noon and 6:00 PM. The EC reiterated that individual station operational hours depend strictly on local voter volume and geographic isolation, with smaller outposts wrapping up operations by midday.
The Final Countdown to Saturday’s General Election Today’s exercise serves as the critical logistical precursor to the main polling day scheduled for this Saturday, July 11.
The high-stakes state election features a highly competitive field of 172 candidates fighting for control of 56 state assembly seats. A massive general electorate of approximately 2.7 million registered citizens is expected to head to the polls over the weekend to determine the state’s next government.
